Small Business Loan News – What Happens When the Funds Run Out in the Stimulus Bill?

If you are a small business owner, you know there was welcome relief in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, popularly known as the Stimulus Act. So what was so great about the Act? Among other things, section 501 reduced the fees paid by borrowers so they did not have to pay the dreaded "SBA loan guarantee fee". This was traditionally 2% of 75% of the loan amount on the large 7(a) loans. Also, section 502 increased the guarantee percentage which pays banks their losses upon default, from 75 to 90%. Cause for celebration? Absolutely. But we must temper our excitement with the fact these benefits may no longer be in effect if Congress does not appropriate more money. In fact, some pundits think it may run out in December based on the volume of SBA loans.

To understand this, you have to get a grasp on why more money is needed. Prior to the Act, banks were given more incentive to make loans because the SBA would step in and pay their losses by a certain percentage. When the guarantee rate went from 75% to 90%, coupled with a higher default rate because of the economy, the Feds had to shell out more money to the banks. And then there was the waiver of SBA guarantee fees which are subsidized by taxpayers-you and I. Without the money, those incentives go way.

So, things were really percolating along as a result of these incentives. In the beginning of 2009, the SBA approved approximately 165 million loans. But by July and August, the figure had risen to 320 million and 400 million respectively. More loans simply meant more risk-increased expenditures by the government.

And so what is Congress doing to find the extra funds? It is probably unlikely to secure additional appropriation in the new Stimulus Act amendments since they have already passed committee and did not include such measures. Instead, Congress is looking into any unused money under our friend (depending on what political aisle you're sitting on) the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). This originally allocated funds to prop up the secondary market. Amendments to that bill could provide some of the appropriation necessary.

Translation: as small business owners we don't care what you call it or who's doing it, just as long as these incentives continue. The fact that there are actually banks making small business loans does wonders to provide needed capital and at least keep our hopes alive in this anguishing financial market.

So what does that mean to me as a small business owner? I'm not interested in a large loan with a lot of paperwork. I simply want a streamlined loan application where I can receive unsecured monies in the neighborhood of 5K to 50K . The last thing anyone wants to see is this type of loan going away. Well, you are in luck. Because of these incentives, banks are actually making these loans under a popular program called SBA Community Express. It does not require business plans, tax returns, or financials , and is now running at the rate of approximately 7.75% or $60 per month for every $5,000 borrowed. We can only keep our fingers crossed that this golden egg laid by Congress remains available.

How to Get Free Magazine Subscriptions – For Business Owners

I enjoy reading stories and news articles about successful business owners, start-ups, and the trials and tribulations of entrepreneurs starting a business. There are certain business magazines that I read each month:

1. Selling Power Magazine: great magazine for sales advice, selling tips, sales management, tips on generating sales leads, professional selling skills, and business motivation.

2. Business 2.0: Best magazine for small business. Articles often include topics such as advertising & marketing for small business, business tools, hiring employees, business management, features on entrepreneurs, business innovation, and technology.

3. Fortune: Normally has articles about successful big companies. Making the Fortune 500 list is the dream of many entrepreneurs across the nation.

4. Fortune Small Business: The sister magazine of Fortune, reporting on small business issues.

5. Revenue - The Performance Marketing Standard: Helping dot-coms earn revenue through affiliate marketing. It provides industry news, product reviews and case studies.

6. Business Edge - provides Canadian business news and stats.

Three of these magazines that I read every month are delivered to me for free. How did this happen? How did I get free magazine subscriptions? When I first launched my business I contacted two of the magazines on the list to inquire about advertising rates and possibilities. I was generally interested in advertising in them because my target market, sales professionals, read them. They are Selling Power Magazine and Business Edge. Just for inquiring they comped a free magazine subscription. This was great since I anyways would have bought these magazines off the newsstand. So, I was getting something that I would have bought for free.

The third magazine that I receive for free is Revenue. I didn't ask for it nor had I even heard of the magazine. The magazine's website states that one of the distribution channels of the magazine is to deliver it to members of industry organizations and key contacts. I guess that would include me; my address is on my website and I'm sure that is how they found it.

Small business owners can receive perks if they know how to get them. The next time you inquire about ad rates in the media, ask to be comped whatever it is that they offer. It worked for me and can work for you as well.

Good News For the Home Based Business Opportunity Seeker

For many people, the idea of getting wealthy from a work at home business is just a dream. For the serious home based business opportunity seeker, there's good news. These dreamers are wrong. It's easier than they ever imagined.

Breaking into Internet Home Business-Easier than IRL

There are several reasons why it's easier to get started with an Internet home business than getting things going "in real life." You may or may not remember when you got your first job. Specifically, the job hunt may be vague in your memory.

Chances are, you were turned down several times before you landed that job. Even more poignantly, you may have recently been in the job market, and have been frustrated with how hard it is to land a job. Opening a business on the Internet skips completely over the job interview process.

If you've tried starting a brick and mortar business, then you know all too well how hard it is to get it off the ground. The saying goes that during your first five years, you can expect to operate in the red. "In the real world," this is more often than not the case. On the Internet, you don't have to wait nearly that long to get in the black.

Starting an Online Home Based Business is Cheap

Nearly anyone can get started with an online home based business. Unlike brick and mortar jobs, it doesn't take a huge investment to get started. You don't have to rent an office space; you don't have to buy initial inventory and supplies.

You can find free web hosting at sites like WordPress. You can order your products after your clients buy them. For that matter, you can sell electronic products, that don't really take any money to inventory. If you have a computer and an Internet connection, you can get started. If you're really strapped for cash in the beginning, you can work at local Wi-Fi hotspots like Starbucks.

You Don't Need a Budget for Marketing Campaigns

Another place Internet business blows "real world" business out of the water is in expenses for marketing campaigns. While brick and mortar businesses are shelling out thousands of dollars to get an ad in the phone book or a billboard, you can spend next to nothing on marketing on the Internet, and have fun while doing it.

Social media sites are fertile ground to implement Internet marketing strategies. You could buy advertising space on these sites, but if you know how to work the social media sites, you don't need to. Groups betting that they can get a million members are all over Facebook right now, and most of them reach their goals. Now imagine if you could harness this potential into a marketing campaign.

Overall, the Internet is the best place to start a business if you're dedicated to the idea of reaching success. It costs much less than "real world" business, and you start making money much sooner than you could ever dream of on Main St. Forget Main St. and get on the Information Superhighway!

These Mobile Stats Are Great News For Your Business

Here's some fascinating statistics about mobile-based web browsing in the USA, for the quarter that just ended:

Two-thirds of people use either an iPhone, or an iPod touch. About fifteen percent use an Android-based phone. About ten percent use a Blackberry device.

(Source: Quantcast.)

This is all GREAT news for you. Let me explain.

You may have heard that the mobile web is emerging as a new MASS MEDIA. Like newsprint, radio, television... even the the regular, desktop-oriented internet itself.

And while people have been able to go online with mobile handhelds for quite some time, until recently, it was often more trouble than it was worth. Things are different now.

Think of the ways that a website can help your business be more successful:

Generating leads Sales and order taking Automating customer service Public relations and Marketing (paired with SEO, helps prospects find you)

The mobile web is the first truly personal mass media... personal and intimate to a degree not possible in other outlets. What's the opportunity? If you can reach prospects and clients through mobile, you have a POWERFUL advantage right off the bat.

Now, back to these numbers I mention at the start. Why are they "great news" for you?

It means those phones providing a better web browsing experience are "leading the pack" in ACTUAL USAGE. That's the important metric, by the way - how many of your potential clients are using the device to go online.

The iPhone platform is dominant at this point. By many objective measures, browsing the web is currently better - more effective, more fun - on that kind of device that its competitors.

That means your web presence will be more impactful on such devices... translating into MORE ways your company's web presence can work for you... giving you a bigger bang for your buck.

(And of course, the iPhone's competitors - like Android and Blackberry - are working hard to catch up. In time this will benefit you even more.)

If your company's website delivers a poor mobile experience, perhaps now is the time to get it fixed - to let it reach people going online with handhelds.

Fortunately, this has become easier and cheaper to do than ever before.
